| Degas, (Hilaire-Germain-) Edgar (1834-1917) A French artist renowned for his ability to draw the human figure in motion and best known for his paintings, drawings and bronzes of ballerinas and of race horses. The way he captures and expresses movement, stressing balance and with a clarity of outline distinguishes him from other Impressionist painters. He commenced his art studies with Louis Lamothes, a pupil of Jean Auguste Ingres who was revered by Degas, then left for Italy, staying there for 5 years studying Italian art, especially Renaissance. Later, after his return to Paris he met, and became greatly influenced by Édouard Manet. |
