| Leighton, Frederick (1830-96) British painter and sculptor who became President of the Royal Academy in 1878 and was elevated to the English Peerage in 1896.. He was brought up and studied in Europe in Germany, France, Belgium and Italy, but returned to live in London in 1860 where he soon established himself as the leading exponent of the sentimental classicism and idealism of the late Victorian era, in opposition to the Pre-Raphaelites. |
