| Seurat, Georges (1859-91) French painter, founder of Neo-Impressionism. Studied at École des Beaux-Arts, his early works show a strong incorporation of the disciplines of Ingres and the techniques of Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. Seurat spent his life studying form, color and line and is best remembered for his technique called pointillism, or divisionism, which uses small dots or strokes of contrasting color to create subtle changes in form. |
