| Gauguin, Paul (1848-1903) French painter, sculptor and graphic artist, born in Paris but brought up in Peru, returned to France to take up work as a successful Stockbroker (1872) after serving first in the French Merchant Marine, spent a short period in Denmark and finally spent the last 10 years of his life in Tahiti. Impressionism excited him and was to form the basis of his works but individual artists were also to have a great influence on his works, notably Pissarro, Cézanne and Van Gogh. Whilst employed as a Stockbroker Gaugin was financially comfortable, however the collapse of his Banking Employer when he was compelled to rely on art for his income changed his financial circumstances for the worse, a situation he never recovered from, dieing a pauper. |
