Italian painter, highly esteemed by and enjoying the patronage of the principal families of Florence. Involved in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and commended by influential diplomats and other leading persons. His reputation waned in his later life as his style of painting was overshadowed first by that of emerging painters including Perugino and Francesco Francia then by the High Renaissance style of Michelangelo and Raphael
