| Titian (c.1485-1576) Full name Tiziano Vecellio, Italian painter, arguably the greatest of the Venetian School. Instructed by Zuccati, the two Bellinis and by Giorgione who was to leave a lasting influence on him. He possessed an extraordinary ability to study and mimic (and improve on) the styles of his contemporaries, an ability which ensured he could complete the "Homage of Frederick Barbarossa to Pope Alexander III begun and left unfinished by Giovanni Bellini on his death. This brought him instant recognition by the Venetian Senate, a recognition which was soon followed by other notables such as the Duke of Ferrara, Pope Leo X, Raphael, Francis I of France and others.
