| Kandinsky, Wassily (1866-1944) Russian born artist and accomplished musician generally considered the pioneer of Abstract Painting, co-founding the Munich group Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider). A relatively late starter he only started painting when he was 30 and went to live in Munich after first training as a lawyer in Moscow. He stayed in Germany until 1933 when he went to live near Paris. His forms evolved from fluid and organic to geometric and, finally, to pictographic. Although often the subject of much controversy his works were at the same time much admired by many others and in particular his studio was visited regularly by Miro, Arp, Magnelli and Sophie Tauber. |
